Telefax-01781240167, 9816953493 Website: Email: Rehabilitation and Restoration camp for fire victims of Tangnu village in Shimla District of Himachal Pradesh In a devastating fire which broke out in Benwari village of Tangnu on the night of 14th January, 2017, about 58 houses were gutted rendering more than 150 people homeless and a couple dozens of cattle dead. The disaster management being one of the mandate of NSS activity, the NSS units of Govt. P. G. College, Seema (Rohru) visited the fire affected village on the next morning to take stock of the situation and the kind of intervention needed by the victims thereafter a pre-camp survey was conducted on 07-03-2017 by involving inhabitants & representatives of PRIs to ascertain type of activity required to be performed by NSS volunteers and it was decided that a special rehabilitation, restoration and awareness camp should be organised for the fire victims of the Tangnu area. Accordingly a two day special camp (Sharamdan) was organised on 25th & 26th March, 2017 at the fire affected village by camping in the village and help the affected villagers in the rehabilitation work. A team of 48 volunteers comprising of 21 girls & 27 boys accompanied by two programme officer in charges camped in the fire affected village for two days and undertook the rehabilitation work in consultation with and requirement of the local inhabitants and the representatives of the village panchayat. The activities undertaken includes clearing of debris of the gutted houses, clearance of drainage and passages, recovering the lost items from the debris, shifting of wooden logs, levelling of sites for reconstruction of houses. Besides this the volunteers engaged and involved the morally shattered villagers particularly the women in prayer and hymn recitation (Shanti path & bhajan kirtan), group dance and folk dances in which they participated for the first time ever since the ill fated tragedy occurred in the village there by restoring back the cheer on their faces. In addition a skit on awareness on disaster management was also performed before the local inhabitants wherein RGNIYD, Chandigarh trained NSS volunteers of TOT on Disaster Management also shared their skills and knowledge on how to avoid and manage the disaster in hilly area in future. The local inhabitants were immensely satisfied and motivated from the contribution of NSS volunteers.
